That means you were probably affected by LP: #1852581, which affected
the hwe-edge version of the 5.3 kernel and was fixed during an update.
That explains how you got an update for that kernel and it fixed your
problem.

Thanks a lot for helping us finding out what was the case for your
issue. I am going to mark this bug as a duplicate of referred bug that
had already the fix released.

  Kernels 5.022 or higher booting issues

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  I tried both kernels (5.022 and 5.023) but my new laptop (Asus zenbook
  14) cannot boot and had to return to kernel 5.019. The error it gives
  was something of the following: "boot - ALERT! ...uuid... does not
  exit! Dropping to shell."

  I am using Linux Mint as a distro.
