Under karmic, I would boot into a shell where I could run a manual fsck. But now I get stuck at the graphical boot screen, without access to a shell. When I try to force booting into a shell using "init=/bin/bash" on the kernel command line in grub, I get an "inappropriate ioctl for device" error followed by the usual shell prompt. However the system does not respond to any keys I press.
