As far as I'm concerned we can just close this bug. It's been more than 3½ years, and I think I've seen it working in the meantime (if probably on different hardware).

Under karmic, I would boot into a shell where I could run a manual fsck. But now I get stuck at the graphical boot screen, without access to a shell. When I try to force booting into a shell using "init=/bin/bash" on the kernel command line in grub, I get an "inappropriate ioctl for device" error followed by the usual shell prompt. However the system does not respond to any keys I press.
