After this, the computer boots to blank screen and is freezing. If I push random keys multiple times or if I keep switching between ttys, the computer shows after one minute the Xubuntu login screen. If I chose from the Grub menu the old linux-image-4.15.0-23-generic kernel, the computer boots very fast directly into graphic mode as it should. I was able to successfully use all the old Ubuntu/Xubuntu LTS versions on this HP laptop. Thank you.
