Doesn't seem like any particular Android setting or permission affects this.. it's something to do with the way the app works. Must be hard to support such a wide range of functionality across Android versions but it's still annoying when it doesn't work as expected. I moved on to sharing files via Syncthing dropboxes, it's probably not faster but way more reliable.
