Now this problem has been reported several times, but in digiKam you have to
tick all sub-albums that you want to search as well. This is easily done via
the right mouse button menu-> Select-> Children. This gives you the option of
excluding sub-albums from the search. The behavior is the same everywhere in
digiKam.
