I can reproduce the unwanted resizing when my screen layout is like this:

|3840x1600 |

______________
| Laptop |
| FHD |
|____________|
Closing laptop lid switches to Ext screen only and messes up window sizes.
When I arrange screens like this:
In my setup I have the following layout:
_____________ ______________
| Ext || Lap |
|3840x1600 ||1920x1080 |
| ||____________|
|___________|
side by side with laptop NOT below external screen the closing lid does NOT
resize all windows to a very small height.
Hope this helps. I haven't found this information in this or other bug reports
yet.
