I found you can click on the empty space right of the file name and drag a few
pixels, it creates a selection rectangle and it will select that file (sure it
requires some additional effort). You can also keep CTRL keyboard key before
clicking on the file (not required when dragging to select several files).
I think one great opportunity here to improve the selection mechanism of
dolphin would be, while keeping the full line highlight introduced recently, to
let only a click on the Name column to trigger the Open action, while the
optional columns of the Detail view (such as: size, timestamp) would act only
for selection.
