On Neon Unstable, the update today solved this problem for me, I can now browse
device and see folders and subfolders as expected, no longer just a phone icon.
New Version:
kdeconnect-20.08.1+p20.04+git20200916.0255-0.amd64
I don't know when this will be available in other channels.
