I much prefer it in the way I suggested in this wishlist report.
Like I said, I don't want to rely on the 10 brush scripts. 
Think of my suggestion as the need of a second pointer that will only target
eraser brush types. Selecting a non-eraser brushes will automatically switch to
the paint brush pointer. Which means that, pressing E again will remember the
last Eraser brush selected with all its settings as well. This one is better in
my opinion.
