Thanks for your report, and for immediately giving lots of useful information.
Even though you only have 4gb of memory, your images are small, so that cannot
be the problem. We have other users on macOS, and we hear of other macOS
specific problems, I haven't heard of this one.
It looks like your mac is a 2015 macbook air, is that right?
Have you used older versions of Krita that did not hang for you? In other
words, did this start happening when you updated to 4.2.9?
If you disable opengl in Krita's settings, does the problem go away?
