When I was on gnome, I relied on this extension to make the overview usable for more than 4 windows (they become really hard to tell apart): https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/60/overlay-icons/ I can't show what my setup looked like cause the extension requires an old version of Gnome, but it basically looked like that screenshot, except the icons were much more translucent and didn't have that gray box around them.
