Perhaps I should have mentioned that the old Modula-2 entry is remembered by Kate even though there is NO xml file for it on my system. In fact, the syntax directory at /usr/share/org.kde.syntax-highlighting/syntax was empty when I started working on this, now there are only the three files I made in it.
