No offense, but I don't undersand the "it's not possible in X11". Openbox
supports it, and i dont think they do any kind of black magic here.
kwin not supporting this is the only reason preventing me to use it in an
otherwise full plasma-kde-desktop env. I'm using two additionnal buttons on my
mouse for moving and resizing, clicking anywhere on the window (and not only on
borders/corners). It helps tremendously. It looks like this in openbox config
file :

<action name="Resize"/>
</mousebind>
<mousebind button="button9" action="Drag">

</mousebind>
