Summary: After using the alternate characters popup remove the
trigger button character

DESCRIPTION
The alternate characters popup is useful for typing special characters, but it
doesn't erase the character that was typed to show the popup in the first
place. It makes typing special characters cumbersome and writing each one
requires doing some fixups afterwards.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Procure a craving for typing the '÷' character
2. Press and hold for a while the '/' key until a popup for writing '÷' appears
3. Press the '1' button to select '÷'
OBSERVED RESULT
'/÷' is written. Now I must press the left button, then 'backspace' and then
the right button to get what I wanted in the first place, just the '÷'
character.
EXPECTED RESULT
'÷' is written.
