Your point is to hide pager, by having one VD, intentionally to reduce clutter and complexity. I think virtual desktop is a fairly known feature, windows and macOs has it too. For the one who don't know the existence of VD, having two VDs will help them find it faster. They can right click and see settings and tinker with it etc. One who doesn't want it can delete by right clicking. I even think Virtual desktop feature is step one of understanding overview and gridview. So it is necessary to show it in the first place. I agree that pager takes some space, but thats the price for better visibility of Virtual desktop feature. I too want to hear other opinions on this.
