Restore your JabRef data file from before you tried the new version and you should be good to go. FWIW, I have both jdk-8u66 (from Oracle) and openjdk-7u91_b02 from SlackBuilds.org installed here and have no problems with JabRef-3.1. I've no idea which JRE it uses, and don't care. It, and the other 2 Java applications run. Good luck!
