I decided to move to JabRef 3.1, and this requiring installing Java
7. It did not work out for a host of reasons. So I retreated to the
JabRef version I've been using, 2.11b4, and replaced java 7 with my old
java 6.

  $ java -version
  java version "1.6.0_36"
  OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.13.8) (6b36-1.13.8-1~deb7u1)
  OpenJDK Server VM (build 23.25-b01, mixed mode)

But instead of restoring an old situation that worked, JabRef if badly
damaged.

When I double click an entry, the editing window does not pop up, only
the bibtex key and abstract is displayed.

Many names are garbled. For example, I have an article written by
S. Zizek in 2004. While its key is Zizek2004, the author's name appears
as Žižek, S. In the author column it appears as Žižek without the
initial.

Without JabRef, I can't work, and so am desperate. It doesn't seem a
Java problem or a coding problem.
