I am currently running JabRef-2.10b2 with an Options->BibTeX Key 
Generator->Default Pattern =

[auth][year:(unk)][shorttitle:abbr:upper]

This will set the last name of the author, followed by year, followed 
by the first letter of the first three non-trivial words (in upper 
case).  That is if there is a year.  If not, then it uses unk for the 
year...

If you read up on the documentation of the key generator you can 
probably figure it out.  I am thinking that there is likely a way to do 
it though.
