Why not using Dropbox, Ubuntu One, SugarSync, Wuala, ... for synchronization? JabRef implemented a sync for in-memory BibTeX data and file system changes. As your app is read-only, it seems to me that you "only" have to use an API of Dropbox/Ubuntu One/SugarSync/Wuala/...
