Separately, for the macos runner issue, i think it is a bigger problem. I think the tests are currently running slower in CI due to the `--max-workers 2` being passed to `gradle`. They run like my 2-core system! But those runners have more than 2 cores: let's max out the hardware with parameters passed to them.
