I actually agree with this and don't see why javascript is necessary at all. Instead my concerns are just security related, around using a relatively raw/bare java framework for a webapp (i like the built-in one too: for testing though!), which is likely to be vulnerable to various issues just because it hasn't had many eyes on it.
