The one you called out is an important one; thanks for bringing that up. We've got an issue tracking it over in #11601. Taxonomy faceting, on the other hand, can require storing a bunch of parent/sibling relationships on-heap, #11601. Anyway, I agree that there are considerations beyond just performance to figuring out if/how we can converge on a single implementation. I still think it would be useful to pull together a summary of the performance differences between the two to help guide our thinking.
