If (and that is an if) the choice is {{lucene/indri}} or {{lucene/sandbox}}
then one approach to change splitting could be a triplet of pull requests:
* part 1 of 3: relocate existing code to {{lucene/indri}} or {{lucene/sandbox}}
* part 2 of 3: additional queries support in {{lucene/indri}} or
{{lucene/sandbox}}
* part 3 of 3: query parser support in {{lucene/queryparser}} or in
{{lucene/indri}} or {{lucene/sandbox}}
