I'm a little unclear why we opted to use a separate branch for this work. Would
it make sense to start removing the deprecated code from lucene/main? Perhaps
we can apply the noncontroversial changes from that branch at least. @rmuir you
expressed some concern about changes to expressions; anything else from that
branch we think is not ready for merging?
