Michael Gibney commented on LUCENE-4312:
----------------------------------------

This sounds great, [~mikemccand]; thanks for considering and helping advance
this issue generally.

bq. I do not think we can work out up front what the "bar" would be to promote
this approach to Lucene's core

That's fair. I feel confident moving forward with the knowledge that the
interest/intention to evaluate is there, and the suggested path of "We
encourage use ..." is encouragement enough, in turn, for me to proceed.

As you suggest, I'll open a new issue (linking to existing issues where
appropriate). It may take a bit of time for me to ramp back up on this. For
instance, I don't have an off-the-cuff answer to whether a change to
{{DefaultIndexChain}} would be necessary (at some point I thought it would be,
but I certainly won't (re)start with that assumption). And {{PostingsEnum}}
certainly doesn't require any changes, given that the branch in question
directly uses stock {{PostingsEnum}}.

Looking forward to working on this again ...
