cc @mikemccand @uschindler that s the cleanup you asked for so that directories that cannot apply the hint don t open their files twice. That would also allow to remove all the finishMerge in a follow up since this is not needed anymore. I opened this PR mainly for the case that random and sequential works in pair and they don t only depend on merge vs default. So a mapping with random needs to have his counter part sequential to handle sequential reads. So a brute force over raw vectors indexed with HNSW and opened with random should be able to expose a sequential reader even for search.
