Jan Høydahl commented on SOLR-14066:
------------------------------------

Here's a revised email draft that I plan to send to solr-user@ and dev@ on
Monday:

Subject: Future of Data Import Handler

Hi all DIH users. The DIH contrib will soon be deprecated and most likely
removed from Solr in version 9. The reason is that it is no longer being
maintained in a manner we feel is necessary in order to keep it healthy and
secure. Also it was not designed to work with Solr Cloud and does not meet
current performance requirements.

We know that many of you rely on DIH, and we'd like to discuss with the wider
user- and developer community whether there is an interest from any of you
(companies or individuals) to take over the development of DIH. Being a contrib
module it is already self-contained, and it would be a good candidate for
packaging up as a Plugin using Solr's new Package Management system[1], for
easier installation and consumption by other users.

On behalf of the Lucene PMC
Jan Høydahl

> DataImportHandler has outlived its utility. DIH doesn't need to remain inside
> Solr anymore. Let us deprecate DIH in 8.4 (and remove it from the Solr distro
> in 9x or 10x).
