Review Comment:
   if close check is true, then we can lose the item in flight, since we're 
done anyway
   
   however, i agree the placement of close check is not natural. See separate 
commits https://github.com/apache/iceberg/pull/10691/commits . I had to put it 
like this to maintain assumptions of existing test. This should be cleaned up.
