gzip -9:        6272 kB RAM RSS
bzip2 -9:       8616 kB
xz -2:  113988 kB
zstd -14:       154684 kB
zstd -19:       198300 kB
xz -6:  517672 kB
xz -9:  691856 kB

So, yes, it does. But you usually do have enough RAM to use better 
compression.
