I can't think of a time when you *shouldn't* use it, really. It may not
offer much of a benefit on some filesystems, but it probably isn't really
ever a loss.
There is a downside in that you can't easily/intuitively determine where in the filesystem a particular mailbox resides. Of course, you can always use the mbpath tool which will point you in the right direction.
This is, of course, only the case with fulldirhash. With the default hashing it is generally fairly easy to determine where a mailbox is.
Right. I made the mental leap from enabling hashing to using fulldirhash, which I shouldn't have.
