"Recommended for large (no of mailboxes) spools". "Large" depends on your filesystem. Linux/ext3 takes some 15 thousend-and-odd users without hashing "fast enough". Do your own tests on your hardware, with your filesystem-of-choice and your OS (this might reduce the number of filesystems to choose from).
