AFAIK, under circumstances not fully known, sometimes there come up 
phenomenons called "db lock gremlins" which result in your services
not responding any more.

Degraded performance, espacially on huge usersbases.

Try db as long as you don't see any gremlins, then 

 a) up/downgrade (?)
 b) change to flat and expect a slower service.
