I'm not sure about the requirement for a specific version of apache (and
can't comment on the others you mention). I've certainly replaced the 
bundled version of apache with later ones and built without problem. Most 
recently, I replaced the bundlded 1.3.17 (which comes with version 1.0.1) 
with 1.3.19.

When I mailed cyrusoft about it, Cyrus Daboo came back with...

"Sorry - no. Didn't get a chance to do that. I'll put this on the list for 
th next release though. Its actually not that hard to substitute a 
different apache distribution in place of ours as we haven't made any 
changes to thr apache directory at all."
