Hi all,

I have fixed this now.  It turned out to be RTFM.  Mea cupla.

To anyone who has the same/similar problem:

Make sure that /usr/lib/sasl exists and points to /usr/local/lib/sasl
(assuming you elect to install in the default location).
  
Also make sure you've completely cleared out any old cyrus sasl versions
and libraries (libsasl) etc. from /usr/lib /usr/local/lib or anywhere
else, and the include files before building the a new sasl release.
