We currently are using inflex on our mail hubs using sendmail. Inflex itself is
a relatively simple perl script that calls a virus checker. Inflex intercepts
incoming mail, optionally checks for virii, bad text, certain file names, or
certain file types. We only conduct virus scans. If the mail passes the tests
if is passed back to sendmail for delivery, otherwise the mail is quaranteened
and the sender and recipient informed.

We are using Sophos as our scanner. We have noticed that the Unix version
of Sophos Sweep doesn't pick up some virii in some attachments. It can pick
the the virus normally.

Another problem is that if the mail server recieves a large number of
messages in a short period then you can run out of file handles. Inflex
doesn't handle this very well.

Apart from this we are happy with results so far and plan to expand the use
of virus scanning of email.

Mark.
