It's not the version number of the software that should be a concern.
Rather, it's how frequently the pattern files are updated. I'm
evaluating VirusWall from Trend Micro (which is EXPENSIVE as all
you-know-what). I'm actually evaluating the Solaris version since our
main mail server is on Solaris, but they also do a Linux version.
Trend Micro updates pattern files weekly and when something like an
ILOVEYOU virus or a PrettyPark comes out, by the time you get into work
in the morning the update will be available and probably already
downloaded and installed.

Keep in mind that new viruses and worms get sprung on us much faster
than you can ever imagine. The most recent weekly pattern file update
from Trend included 302 new viruses and modified signature recognition
for 38 viruses it already can detect. That's VirusWall's primary
selling feature. It is robust and suprisingly easy to use, but if
pattern file maintenance isn't 24x7, you really don't have any security
at all.
