Did you change the existing search_algorithm line or add a new one? If you added a new one, make sure that the old one is either removed or commented out. The default htdig.conf does explicitly specify this attribute. Did you try 0.5 rather than .5? Not sure if that actually makes any difference, but it is an easy enough test. If the above doesn't help, take another close look at your settings with an eye toward typos and misspellings.
