Did you change the existing search_algorithm line or add a new one? If you
added a new one, make sure that the old one is either removed or commented
out. The default htdig.conf does explicitly specify this attribute.

Did you try 0.5 rather than .5? Not sure if that actually makes any
difference, but it is an easy enough test. If the parser is purposely or
accidently being picky, it might be ignoring the value you are specifying.

In general it sounds like you are doing the right thing. If the above
doesn't help, take another close look at your settings with an eye toward
typos and misspellings.
