Has the printer 'ever' worked? What's the parallel port set to in your

I'm sorry but I have to install too many "unnecessary" packages in
order to compile from source and it's not possible at the moment.
Also, I prefer having the installed stuff ordered in the way dpkg
does.
Any other suggestions?
