There no explicit call to close_wait in hpiod or hp.c. May be in the kernel.
Although can you run:
ps ax | grep hp
kill the hpssd proc.
cd /usr/share/hplip
./hpssd.py -ldebug -x
continue using hplip until the problem occurs and post the hpssd.py log.
Also run:
tail -f /var/log/messages
and reproduce the problem and post that as well.
