I seem to remember that Queen Elizabeth I was wrapped in red flannel when
she had smallpox.

Just jumping in on this one but I think the colour red as being better is a
hangover from an earlier period.  Red flannel had been used in the treatment
of disease.  Red flannel underskirts certainly appear earlier than the
Victorian period.
