Quick and dirty sewing like I haven't done in ages. Tomorrow is our square
dance for the local spring festival with the theme, "Rollin' on the River." The
committee folks are doing full fantasy ante-bellum outfits with hoops and
ruffles, in blue and ginger, of all colors. Well, I don't have that kind of
time or energy, so I went looking on eBay and found a little over a yard of
1960s home decorator barkcloth fabric with steamboats printed on, among other
motifs. The way the steamboats are spaced, I decided the best I could do is cut
those areas out in oval shapes and applique them onto a skirt. There are 6, so
my six-gore skirt is alternating panels of a blue that almost matches the water
in the print, and a gold that matches the foliage of the trees. Got the
appliques stitched on and the skirt serged together last night. Need to do the
elastic casing today and figure on a hem treatment. Even though it will take a
while, I'm thinking of bias strips from the fabric as a band,!
just to pick up the other colors in the print, but I'll see how making my own
bias tape goes with this fabric.

not really.... well, not much... my husband found a duvet cover at St Vinnie's
he other day, lovely cherry cotton velveteen. he's crowing about making a
ummer-weight frock coat for his steampunkery, since I got him the patterns last
hristmas... of course, the pattern came with 2 vests, but not a
ouble-breasted one like he wants... or maybe we'll experiment with this stuff
nd use it for a lining eventually?
for myself, he also found a P(urdue?) black melton stadium blanket at the same
tore?, the preceding week, for, again, $11.99, for MY current daydreaming
roject, a Caucasus "burka", men's winter garment, as per this pic...

nd of course, as soon as we found this fabric, it got warmer! Still working
hrough cleaning up the blanket, deciding what to do with the excess fabric
probably going to leave it attached but hemmed up or something...), and whether
r not the cleaned-up wool will be nice enough against the skin, or if I'll have
o figure out some sort of lining... Part of the clean-up involved leaving it
ut on a clothes-line for several days... the way the water beaded on the
urface was just classic!
