Thanks Tom for replying. Problem solved - we had a single prohibited product which resulted in all our products being disapproved. Once we had removed it, re- uploaded all our products and got approval from the google guys, we are up and running again.
The Java Batch API worked really well, uploading about 14k products (in batches of 100 products) in around 1 hour.
