VILLAGERS OBSERVE STIR: Nearly 700 villagers on August 31 observed a chain
hunger strike in front of the Penha de Franca panchayat to demand the
immediate scrapping of the controversial city of Panaji Corporation Bill,
2000, passed by the Goa Assembly. (WE-GT)
BILL UNDER PRESSURE: The Panaji City Corporation Bill had been introduced
in haste and under very suspicious circumstances and it needs to be
condemned. I personally feel, better sense prevails and the Chief Minister,
Mr Manohar Parrikar, will be able to gauge the mood of the people, the
amount of anger, dissatisfaction and disappointment, that the whole process
has generated, and be more responsive to our concerns and scrap it. (Gen

TALEIGAO IS A VILLAGE, ST CRUZ IS A CITY: Different opinions are being
expressed over the government (rather Manohar Parrikar's) decision to form
a corporation for the city of Panaji. Whispers have it that the legislation
was Parrikar's compulsion (helplessness) and one of the moving forces
behind it was Atanasio Monserrate, the legislator from Taleigao, who wanted
to fulfill his promise made to his voters that he would get Taleigao

WOMAN DIES: Mrs Ram Rani, a 22-year-old woman residing at Karaswado in
Mapusa succumbed to self-inflicted injuries. The deceased suddenly became
violent and started shouting and hitting her head against the wall. Later,
she hit a grinding stone on her head and collapsed. (WE-GT)
STINKING PROBLEM: Foul water and night soil flowing over the pavement of Dr
Borges building in Vasco has irked the residents who complain that the
Mormugao Municipal Council is insensitive to their problems. (WE-GT)
UNDERGROUND POWER CABLES FOR CITIES: The Power Minister, Mr Digamber Kamat,
announced on August 31 that plans are afoot to have underground electricity
cables for all the cities. (NT)
CLOSE BARS BY 9 PM: While speaking at the inauguration of a day-long
seminar organised by the Kare College in Margao yesterday, Urban
Development Minister Digamber Kamat suggested that bars be closed by 9 pm
as late night accidents were found to be mainly due to intoxication. He
urged the students to convey this message to the parents as well as others

FREE MILK PACKET: As per a waste management programme being implemented by
the Goa State Co-operative Milk Producers' Union Ltd at Curti, Ponda, the
consumers will have to store 100 empty packets and in exchange will be
entitled for one free milk packet any milk booth in the State. (WE-GT)
PETROL, DIESEL PRICES HIKED: State-run oil companies on August 31 announced
upto 23-34 paise per litre increase in the retail selling price of petrol
and diesel.
NO AMBITIONS OF BEING CM: Scotching rumours about his desertion to become
the next chief minister, the Urban Development Minister, Digambar Kamat,
said that he will never to any act which will put the people of Margao to
shame and expressed confidence that whatever position he is entitled for
will come to him one day naturally. (H)
HALF-TON "GOBRO" CAUGHT: A nearly 10-feet long "gobro" (fish) weighting
nearly half-a-ton, was netted by "Christ the King", a mechanised fishing
vessel owned by Menino Rodrigues from Colva, deep in the Arabian sea on
Saturday evening. The fish, which was landed at Cutbona fishing jetty ON
August 31, is priced at around Rs.10,000 in the market. (H)
STEALING STEREO: Margao police arrested Succor Almeida of Borda and G Tari
of Betul, for stealing a stereo worth Rs.5000 from the car of Sanjay R Naik

the Salgaocars to produce this book ('Fare Forward, Voyager'), and I must
tell you that Mr Simoes donated this whole amount for the construction of
