After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, not to mention many failed mail sending attempts and a couple more password changes, our mail admin restarted the saslauthd process. That seemed to solve the problem, not sure why. It seems some of its threads had cached old password lookups, so perhaps early on, some threads saw the new password, others saw the old. I don't know. At any rate, I seem to be back in business.
