Marko had the answer. I did not know that shortcuts were turned off in the laptop's copy of Chrome, and I didn't know how to turn them on and off. It was one of those things which are so simple that to people who already know them, it's annoying to have someone ask the question - but to those of us who don't know, it can be an unsolvable mystery.
