Drive exists "in the cloud", on Google's servers. I don't know what the "upload" is that you have been seeing, because I don't have the odd new way of attaching photos that you seem to have to use. I suppose it's possible that you have been uploading them into your Google Drive account space. I have not seen your problem with opening embedded photos.
