A child label doesn't inherit the color of its parent label. However, you can set the color of the parent label (even if setting it to the same color it already has) and specify that it and all its children labels also get the same color. It's almost as good.
Unfortunately, Google keeps on changing what the available label colors are, so I often end up with labels having orphaned colors that Gmail no longer supports. Arrgh.
