Sorry but gmail is a mail client and more effective than most of desktop 
solutions because it's available from anywhere and it's cross-platform 
without the need to install any software. And it's far more secure if the 
user has the two-step authentification and disconnect after each session. 
Sorting, labelling, retrieving from multiple email addresses, and 
automation are the main characteristics of a mail client. So it's still has 
default like the lack of IMAP support for retrieving mail from other 
addresses, but it's better than any desktop solution except for special 
cases.
And for my friends because they move a lot and switch between many 
computers, Gmail is the right way, even if it has still to improve itself...
