Searching for Java support for webp returns projects that are discontinued or even removed from repositories (like the Luciad one). The webp library itself<https://github.com/webmproject/libwebp> seems to have java bindings, but they are not deployed in the Maven repositories it sees, so one has to build everything from source. Assuming one can get a encoder/decoder for webp bound to Java, then changes to these libraries should be made, creating a new TIFFWebPCompressor/Decompressor, and supporting the same TIFF tags that GDAL is using for it in the TIFFImageReader: https://github.com/geosolutions-it/imageio-ext/tree/master/plugin/tiff/src/main/java/it/geosolutions/imageioimpl/plugins/tiff Overall, does not seem trivial, but possibly doable.
